About Our Class
Students at Skylight Books
In this course, seniors learn how to be expert contemporary readers and prepare for the increased workload of college-level literature courses. Students read a novel every two weeks. Readings are synced to publication dates so students will have the opportunity to access brand new fiction and to participate in a living, emergent conversation about literature. This also means that each time the class is offered, its contents change. Students read for patterns, preferences, and aesthetic changes, as well as for the pleasure and art of each individual novel. They also develop cultural literacy—learning how to track the impact of a recently published book by regularly engaging sources such as The New Yorker, The New York Times Book Review, The Los Angeles Review of Books, and LitHub. We digest the novels and supplementary articles in a seminar-style discussion setting and write our own reviews for our community.
